Why is this important?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis usually affecting the lungs, but can impact the kidney, spine, and brain, and if not treated properly, can be fatal. TB transmission is air-borne, spread by an infected person coughing, sneezing, speaking or singing, and non-infected people inhaling the respiratory droplets. Some people develop active TB within weeks of becoming exposed, some may take years to develop the disease, and others may never develop the active form of TB. Symptoms of TB include a severe cough which lasts more than three weeks, chest pain, coughing up blood or sputum (mucous), weakness, fatigue, weight loss, lack of appetite, chills, fever, and/or night sweats.
