Middle School Students Who Visited a Dentist: Past Year

County: Washoe
Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the percentage of middle school students who visited a dentist during the 12 months before the survey.

Why is this important?

Young people do take chances and engage in risky behaviors. They also live in a home and family environment that exposes them to adverse and potentially traumatic experiences. These combined factor have the potential for negative long-term health outcomes. In order to estimate the prevalence of risk behaviors, as well as protective factors among adolescents, the Youth Risk Behavioral Survey (YRBS) is administered to middle and high school students in odd years across the nation. The YRBS is voluntary, parental permission is required for participation, not all questions are asked in every survey year, and questions may change. Results include self-reported responses to questions related to the following areas: violence; emotional health; substance use; sexual health; physical activity, nutrition, and obesity; and ACEs (adverse childhood experiences in the home and family environment that may lead to risky behaviors).
