High School Students Who Eat Vegetables: Past 7 Days

County: Washoe
Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the percentage of high school students who ate vegetables one or more times per day during the seven days preceding the survey.

Why is this important?

It is essential to eat a fresh, healthy and balanced diet in order to maintain a healthy weight and prevent chronic disease. Numerous studies have shown a clear link between the amount and variety of fruits and vegetables consumed and rates of chronic diseases, especially cancer. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, about one third of all cancers can be prevented through a nutritious diet that includes vegetables, physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends making healthy daily food choices that includes vegetables, although the recommended daily amounts depend on age, sex, and level of physical activity. Despite the benefits, many people still do not eat recommended levels of fruits and vegetables. This is particularly true of consumers with lower incomes and education levels.
