Alternative Fuel Fleet-Vehicles

Measurement Period: 2017

The total estimated alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) inventory in use by fleets in Nevada (excludes vehicles in use by private citizens, non-fleet users, and ethanol blend flexible fuel vehicles estimated to be using only traditional gasoline or diesel fuel).

Alternatives to traditional transportation fuels include compressed or liquified natural gas, high blend ethanol (85% or more), propane (liquified petroleum gas), hydrogen, and electricity. The vehicle can be either a dedicated vehicle designed to operate exclusively on alternative fuel or non-dedicated designed to operate on alternative fuel and/or traditional fuel. Plug in hybrid electric vehicles are included because the primary input fuel is electricity. Gasoline and diesel-electric hybrids are not considered alternative fueled vehicles because the primary input fuel is not an alternative fuel.

Why is this important?

The Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992 created goals, directives, and amended utility laws to increase clean energy use and improve overall energy efficiency in the United States, which in turn improves the environmental health of communities. EPAct details various measures to lessen the nation's dependence on imported energy, provide incentives for clean and renewable energy, and promote energy conservation in buildings. EPAct also mandates the Energy Information Administration collect data annually on the number of AFVs in use and amount of alternative transportation fuel consumed for a limited set of fleet user groups.  AFV fleet users are defined as any entity (company or organization) that operated an on-road vehicle capable of consuming alternative fuel in the conduct of its business.

TransAtlas is an interactive map that uses a Google Maps interface to display existing and planned alternative fueling stations.
